A fire had patrons of the Granada heading for the exits just before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Emergency crews were called to the nightclub at 1020 Mass. in downtown Lawrence after reports of a fire in the building.

Witnesses say no one was injured in the incident. Fire crews have not yet determined the cause.

The incident occurred during “Take Back the Night,” which is an event supporting women who have been victims of sexual violence.

Steven Payne was on stage setting up for his band’s next show when smoke filled the building, and he said he’s glad things didn’t turn out worse.

“We started seeing smoke everywhere,” Payne said. “The staff was really cool about it. They just told everyone, ‘Hey, we don’t know what’s going on; there’s smoke,’ and kind of ushered everyone out.”

Good to hear that the building emptied safely. Emptying a club can go very bad, very quickly, especially if smoke is making it hard to see and breath. Good job Granada staff for getting everyone out safely.

^^^not so funny, 300+ people died in that.

Kudos to the staff for getting everyone out quickly.

Good thing I decided not to go to this event. I hope the fire didn't cause any serious damage--the Granada was recently renovated.

I feel that the lack of injuries associated with this fire allows me to make this one joke...it looks like the night took *them* back! Har har.

No, 100 people died and a couple of hundred were injured. The Station fire was bad, but not 300+ dead bad.
