LHS upgrades

August 25, 2009

To the editor:

On behalf of the Lawrence High School football family, I wish to extend our sincere thanks to the entire Lawrence community. This is a very special time for all of us at Lawrence High School, and we could not be more pleased with our new stadium and field. This project reflects the outstanding support that our community gives to public education and reflects the many deeply rooted convictions that our community has.

“Thank you” does not come close to expressing the feelings we have for the USD 497 board of education, Superintendent Rick Doll, former Superintendent Randy Weseman and our neighbors who have worked with us to accommodate this project. We are very proud of the rich tradition that is present at any Lawrence High School activity. Many generations of local families are represented on our new fields and in the other major facility improvements already completed or to be completed soon. You have stepped up and made our school facility an even better place in which to mold the futures of Lawrence’s young people.

With 150 physical education students, 175 marching band members, 80 football players and 60 soccer players using our new football field on a daily basis, it will be a very busy place this fall. We invite the entire community to come out on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. and join us for our home opener when we host Shawnee Mission North High School.

So, Dick, if the district hadn't spent $million on the new fields, would those programs have been cancelled?

Have a great year Coach Wedd and know that your community supports LHS and your efforts and dedication to kids.

I join in the immediately previous poster's thoughtful comment.

Coach, some of the posters on here must sound like some of the kids you have to deal with, only not as disciplined. I think the new facilities are a great idea. Students do better when they can have pride in their school. People still do not hesitate to stereotype athletes as dumb jocks. This has got to stop.

Hey...no problem Dick We had a few million that wasn't doing anything so why not invest in some fake grass. We may get around to educating the kids soon too.

It is unfortunate that not everyone supports the sports programs. Students learn from sports (even though it is not in the classroom setting). Since Haskell was not willing to share their facilities anymore, it seemed that the school district had to do something for the kids. Let's hope it is the beginning of a positive new era for the up and coming athletes at both schools.

" Since Haskell was not willing to share their facilities anymore,"

First I've ever heard of that. What's your source?

mom_of_three 8 years, 8 months ago

From what I understand, Haskell made money from concessions, but LHS and their clubs could not. So having our own facilities enables our students to earn money, as well as having pride in their school.
I can not wait for the new facilities to be finished.
Lions football on the 4th, KU football on the 5th. Should be a great weekend.

Bozo, USD 497 was willing to contribute over a million dollars to Haskell to partner with them to put field turf on their football field and greatly improve their facilities. After enormous effort had been expended by USD 497 personnel, they gave up. The administration at Haskell simply didn't want to, or was unable to, get close to a deal, even in light of the substantial sum of money that Haskell was being offered. Please be assured that there remain a great number of people in this community who have a deep and abiding love of Haskell Indian Nations University and would have much preferred to have Lawrence high school football teams play their games at a much-improved Haskell stadium, especially because of the positive interaction between Haskell and the community that the partnership had previously fostered. Under the circumstances, the only choices remaining were a shared facility or facilities at each school, and the USD 497 Board of Education chose the latter. Once the LHS stadium is fully completed, it will be an exciting, first-class venue - but to many in Lawrence it will take a long time for it to equal Haskell Stadium and the wonderful memories of LHS football games there.

Number 1 Grandma

You should be ashamed of yourself for this kind of comment. Coach Wedd went above expectations by posting his thanks to the community. This uncensored format opens it up for worthless comments like yours by taking pot shots at the coach who is just doing his job and trying to produce a class program.

momofthree, you might want to check your sources about concessions. LHS is not letting the kids groups do the concession stands for fund raising, it is being outsourced. Wow, it was really worth having a home field when the kids have no control over making money on their home field. Just like at Haskell! Glad we have our own field now (inset sarcasm).

Before someone tells me I spelled insert wrong, i'm sorry that was (insert sarcasm), not (inset sarcasm).

Some of us don't support the sports programs because we think the sports culture has evolved into an unhealthy and negative influence not only on kids but on the country.

Thanks for spending an enormous pile of money while cancelling bus services! (how many decades could the cancelled buses run for the price of ONE stadium much less two?!) Thanks for lighting up everyones living rooms with your field lights! Thanks for all the muddy runoff! Thanks for building a big sound bowl that directs the band noise (that goes until well after 9:00pm) straight up into the University Place neighborhood! Thanks for causing two owner occupied homes next to the field to become rentals!! (so far and it's not even football night yet) Thanks for being sooo transparent about how you'll fund it! Thanks for the inappropriate permiting process!

I love the whole "sports teaches kids things", yeah well so do teachers & jobs       .

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate sports, the kids, & the teachers greatly. But this was a farce during a huge depression. He ought to be appreciative because all the people paying property taxes will have "dear suckers, the football coach says thanks!" written on next years tax appraisals.

That's ok though, the houses around LHS will all become student slums & the tax value slump will eventually offset the "benefit" at which point the school district won't have the ability to maintain any of these facilities.
