Suburban Newspapers of America on Monday named the Lawrence Journal-World the Newspaper of the Year for 2009.

It is the third time in five years the newspaper has won first place in the contest that honors newspapers for general excellence, including news, writing and design, as well as advertising, marketing and press reproduction.

The Journal-World competed in the category of daily newspapers with a circulation under 30,000. The newspaper placed first in 2005 and 2007 and second in 2006.

SNA represents more than 2,000 newspapers in North America.

Congrats to the staff! That's pretty cool, 3 out of 5. Goes to show how little all those that scream "I won't be buying your paper anymore" know.

I agree, Jaywalker. Very good 'news'! Congrats to a dedicated staff, wonderfully creative minds, diligence in reporting, and the ability to change over time in a timely and unique manner.

I suggest Mr. Gage take everyone who works (not me - paid staff and especially those who run the presses) out to lunch! But Dolph Simon gets to pick up the tab.... ;)

Congratulations! The honor is well-deserved.

There should be a sign on the interstate that says "Home of the Lawrence Journal World - Newspaper of the Year"

And who did the LJW beat out?

The Galveston, TX Daily News, the Daily Journal of Kankakee, IL, and the Southeast Missourian of Cape Girardeau, MO.

Let's not put that sign on the interstate just yet, it would be like K-State putting up a sign for their minor league debate championship.

Yes, congratulations to the Journal World. It is an excellent newspaper. The online staff is very goo and very patient when dealing with posters. I know it is difficult to stay polite when the other person is having a very bad day and taking it out on you. Thanks to the Journal World staff for all that you do.

Sorry, sorry, clicked too soon. good not goo.

Ya, right. that is why everyone in Lawrence has to read the Topeka Capital or Kansas City Star to find out what happens in Lawrence because the Urinal World refuses to print the names of those arrested.

I am still laughing!!

Ditto on the congrats. BTW, If the "online staff is very goo" as Irish points out, then I know a good degreaser :-)

Making LJW like the second coming of river*itytalks may get a lot of page views, but is that really what they want?

Exactly! I mean, it's like they think that the paper has some function other than providing fodder for gossip or something!
