Midwest survey shows economy still firmly outside growth range

? A monthly survey of rural bankers suggests that the economy in a region of 11 Midwest and Plains states is sputtering in foul territory.

The Rural Mainstreet Index dipped to 32.0 in August from 32.6 in July and 34.0 in June.

A reading of 50.0 is considered growth neutral.

The overall index is still significantly higher than the index’s record low of 16.9 in February.

The survey covers Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

The survey’s confidence index, which reflects what the bankers expect six months from now, rose slightly, to 46.0 from 44.6 in July, but it, too, remained below growth neutral.
