County budget OK’d with no tax increase

Douglas County commissioners Wednesday night officially approved the county’s 2010 budget, which does not include a property tax mill levy increase.

Commissioners gave final approval after a budget hearing. No one from the public addressed the commission during the hearing. In July, the commission crafted a 2010 budget that included a 1 percent cut for county departments. Social service agencies didn’t receive as steep an amount of cuts as originally projected.

Commissioners on Wednesday also unanimously agreed to authorize county staff members to submit an application to the Kansas Housing Resources Corp. to try to receive federal stimulus funds for homeless prevention.

The county will submit the application on behalf of the Salvation Army, Women’s Transitional Care Services, ECKAN and Ballard Community Services. The grant funds could help with rental and utility payment assistance, especially for families affected by the recession.
