Bus priorities

To the editor:

In our recent school budget cuts, our school board is cutting funding drastically, including school bus service. When my kids will be walking to school, I will be at work worried about if they have walked down Clinton Parkway and have crossed Iowa and other streets just to get to Schwegler or South Junior High, and also Lawrence High.

I have wondered why there are no crossing guards at major intersections like at Iowa or 31st streets. And I have been told that it would be unsafe to put a citizen there or it’s not within the city of Lawrence’s budget. And when I see an article saying the city is planning to fund a shuttle bus to Kansas University football games, I am just amazed at who we have in office running the city.

Will the city not even consider helping the youth of today’s society? The kids that we have now in our education system, these are the children that will be helping you and I in our older years, such as I am working to help my elders. And if they can’t rely on our city, who can they rely on? This town needs to spend more on education/safety for our children and less on KU and its sports. I would like to see more money spent on crossing guards than on the using the T (public transportation) just for the fun of it.
