Sale success

To the editor:

On behalf of the United Way of Douglas County campaign cabinet and board of directors, we would like to sincerely thank the community for supporting our first annual United Way Community Garage Sale last weekend. We want to thank all of the volunteers who donated their time and effort, and everyone in the community who donated items. It was a great opportunity to LIVE UNITED.

Together, we realized $3,700, which will go directly into the 2009 United Way campaign. More importantly, United Way was able to provide direct support to families and individuals as well as foster a variety of partnerships with community organizations with the goal of recycling our treasures. Leftover clothing from the sale was delivered to the Social Service League, kitchen items were delivered to agencies serving families, and books were delivered to the Lawrence Public Library.

Please plan to join us in some way during the 2009-2010 United Way campaign. Whether by giving a donation or volunteering your time, we will appreciate any gesture of humanitarian effort as we meet the future challenges. Let us actually do what our campaign theme suggests: LIVE UNITED!
