What to do in Larry tonight

The Asteroid Head Art Club

Art Opening: “Asteroid Head Would Like To Have A Word With You”

The lovable weirdos behind Lawrence’s Asteroid Head Art Club take a break from summer camping and launching off flight capsules to unveil 64 new works on paper. You will not be punished, and you might even laugh – but hopefully not cry.

Art: “xy”

Also in art, the Spencer’s latest exhibit, “xy” is a provocative (and sometimes sexually explicit) exploration of masculine sexuality. Full exhibit info here.

Douglas County Fair

It’s the last big night at the Douglas County Fair, with a 7-10 p.m. performance from local country/classic rock band Rural Route 4 and a Tractor Pull beginning at 7 p.m. The carnival will be in full effect, along with funnel cakes and all the Top 40 music you’ve managed to avoid this summer.

Film: (500) Days of Summer

(500) Days of Summer is this week’s most appealing new movie, opening tonight at Liberty Hall. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel star in this engagingly breezy tale of a guy with a broken heart and the girl who broke it. Movie times and our view here…

And in music…. The Breeders

Remember this…?

Of course, that’s the superbadass blast from the ’90s past from alt-rock gals The Breeders, back with a fourth album, “Mountain Battles,” and a new EP, “Fate to Fatal.” Both guitar-wielding Deal sisters will take the stage tonight at the Bottleneck with support from overdrive-loving garage rockers Times New Viking. Get hyped up by listening to our podcast interview with Kim Deal.

Drama

The Granada will likely be a mad scene as it hosts Drama (formerly a DJ for T.I. and Slum Village) and rapper Willie the Kid. One the biggest names on the rap mixtape circuit, Drama has showcased artists like Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, and Jim Jones via his “Gangsta Grillz” series. Drama has spent much of his hard-earned skrill fighting racketeering charges in court, so if his posse offers their you protection, run the other way.

Justin Ripley

Justin Ripley

Lawrence expatriate and current Seattle-dweller Justin Ripley performs one in a series of homecoming shows with his crack band featuring members of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk and Rooftop Vigilantes. The gang sounded great in their debut performance a couple weeks ago, so just imagine how good they’ll be with a couple more practices! Check out our recent podcast interview with Ripley to get a taste of his abnormal pop-smears.
