Fearless leaders?

The state GOP political campaign against the Obama plan to move Guantanamo detainees to Fort Leavenworth looks like ordinary political fear-mongering on steroids. Sen. Roberts tells us that we have nothing to fear from a federal bio-terrorist research facility coming to Kansas, but suspected enemy combatants? Heaven forbid. I thought the bio-lab was full of deadly chemical and biological agents (weapons of mass destruction) that are invisible, airborne killers of everything that breathes.

Are these enemy combatants super-human and able to see through doors and walk through walls, or are they just like the other goat herders who avoided being rounded up in Afghanistan over seven years ago? I thought Fort Leavenworth enjoyed its well-deserved reputation as the place that puts bad guys away for good and trains military leaders in the art and science of protecting America from foreign enemies.

“Sending detainees to Fort Leavenworth would put a bull’s-eye on Leavenworth’s schools, hospitals and small businesses.” Oh, please! Lynn Jenkins, this is still the land of the brave and the free. A famous president once said: “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” It seems the GOP has decided that we have nothing but fear itself.
