Battle of Black Jack exhibit receives grant

The Black Jack Battlefield Trust has received a $7,296 grant from the Kansas Humanities Council to fund the production and travel costs of the Battle of Black Jack traveling exhibit.

The exhibit, which will travel to Harpers Ferry, W.Va., in October for the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid, describes and details the 1856 Battle of Black Jack in Douglas County.

Kerry Altenbernd, project manager for the exhibit, said the exhibit commemorates a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

“(It was) the first true battle in the American Civil War,” Altenbernd said.

The exhibit will return to Kansas and be displayed at sites in the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area in eastern Kansas and western Missouri.
