KU, city looking for joint transit site

August 5, 2009

City commissioners unanimously agreed to seek proposals for a site that could accommodate a new transit maintenance facility that would be jointly operated by the city and Kansas University.

The lease for the current maintenance facility near 31st and Haskell expires in 2010. The city believes a jointly operated facility with KU’s bus system will end up saving the city money on maintenance costs.

love the headline, but i don't think its legal. Is craig's list the hip site to look for joints? If they run a site jointly for joints, they would really need that new transit maintenance facillity.

Damn it all. I saw the headline and thought the bus systems were looking for a place for all the buses to meet at the same time for transfers, unlike the T's unshakable stupid system where you have to wait downtown 20 minutes each way between many routes.

    Shouldn't have expected.

Thank you, average. The headline made me think that the two transit systems had come to the brilliant conclusion that they need a common depot where passengers could make their connections. Perhaps that is already in the works?

That 20-minute wait between buses downtown is onerous, and now that the number 4 is rerouted because of construction at Second and Locust (the second half of the route was eliminated), I have another 20-minute delay built in into my commute on the way to work--most of it spent in the bus sitting at the ghost-town outlet mall near I-70.

I hope the T management is seriouly thinking about how to make mass transit in this town more usable, not less so.

Looks like a pretty fair way to share expenses. Everyone should be careful, though, to make sure that this doesn't slide into a merger that might not be beneficial to students.

how about a sneltram. some nice light rail from the turnpike (outlet mall) across the river, up vermont and over to the university. then the buses could meet at the sneltram hubs and distribute people to the more obscure locations.

The ex-Farmland site would be an ideal location for a maintenance facility.

I will be glad to see all of the bus traffic move off Haskell Ave. Truck traffic continues to increase with no SLT completion in sight.
