Bishop Seabury plans sports upgrades

Workers Jorge Simental, right, Santos Hernandez and Roberto Laon fill fence post holes with concrete Thursday as construction continues on the new football field adjacent to Bishop Seabury Academy. The field will also be used for physical education classes.

The Bishop Seabury team will play two home games this year — against the Kansas School for the Deaf, Sept. 5; and against Kansas City East Christian Academy, Oct. 2.

Also on Seabury’s schedule: Cair Paravel Latin School, Topeka; Veritas Christian School, Lawrence; Flint Hills Christian School, Manhattan; St. John’s Military School, Salina; and Sunrise Christian Academy, Bel Aire.

Athletic fields at Lawrence’s public high schools aren’t the only ones getting a summer makeover.

Bishop Seabury Academy is turning a grassy field just east of the school into a multi-use facility for physical education classes, as well as soccer and football practice. Officials at the private Episcopal school also hope they can give their 3-year-old Division II eight-man football team a home-field advantage.

“We hosted one game last year on the old field, which was completely flat, and it was a hand-done field entirely,” said Eric Nelson, athletic director at the school, 4120 Clinton Parkway. “We packed the place.”

The field has been graded recently, and the school’s headmaster hopes sod will be put in by the start of school on Aug. 20.

“We’ve had all of our classes and practices out here, but it’s not always been ideal for practices,” said Headmaster Don Schawang.

The field upgrade was part of the school’s strategic plan last year.

“With the help of parents and a donation from a grandparent of one of our students, we’ve been able to make that happen,” Schawang said.

The sod will extend behind the school. The academy’s leaders are hoping it creates more school pride.

“For me, having a facility is really a representation of their achievements and their potential,” Schawang said. There are no plans to put lights in.

Nelson has scheduled two home football games this season. “Hopefully, we’ll get a lot of rain after the sod gets down and not before, and we’ll be able to get it finished before school,” he said.

The football team will start playing its eight-game season in September. “It’s my hope that bringing football and the opportunity to play varsity football at this level will really enrich their experience here,” Nelson said.
