Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Among significant projects expected to affect drivers this week in the area:

Lawrence

• City crews are scheduled to fill cracks this week on sections of North Second Street, North Iowa Street and — during early-morning hours — the downtown area. Such work will close several hundred feet of a single lane at a time, with each closure lasting for a few hours.

• Repairs at the intersection of Kasold Drive and West 22nd Street are scheduled to close the entrance to the Hy-Vee Shopping Center from West 22nd Street.

• A section of East 902 Road, below the Clinton Lake dam, remains closed for resurfacing. The city’s Mutt Run Dog Park is closed, and access to Eagle Bend Golf Course is limited to traffic coming in from the south on East 902 Road. The project is expected to last into May.

• Drivers may encounter brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth Street, near Queens Road, is closed to accommodate widening of the street.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa, continues to be closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic also is limited north of the intersection.

• Drivers should expect delays while being directed through a work zone at 15th and Harper streets.

• Traffic continues to be limited along streets adjacent to the construction site for The Oread, near the northern end of Kansas University’s main campus. Among limitations for this week: Oread Avenue, closed to through traffic from 12th to 13th streets.

U.S. Highway 24

• Traffic headed east on U.S. Highway 24 will be limited to one lane between Soldier Creek in Topeka and Muddy Creek in Grantville, as crews make pavement repairs. Work is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day through Friday, weather permitting.

Interstate 470

• Traffic heading west on Interstate 470, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, will be prevented from using the right lane over Shunga Creek, near the 29th and Fairlawn Road interchange in Topeka, because of pavement-repair work.

Interstate 35

• Traffic headed north on Interstate 35, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, will be prevented from using the left lane between Interstate 635 and Lamar Avenue in Johnson County, as crews work to repair signs.

Interstate 70

• Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Interstate 70 will be reduced to one lane for traffic heading west, from Central Avenue to Seventh Street in Wyandotte County. The closure — for work to repair joints — is scheduled to continue, around the clock, until Friday.

• A ramp bridge connecting westbound I-70 with southbound Interstate 635 in Wyandotte County is scheduled to remain closed through Wednesday, as crews work to seal the surface.
