Fire at Mass Street Hookah causes $42,000 in damage

A Wednesday morning fire caused $42,000 in damage to a structure in downtown Lawrence, fire officials said.

Firefighters from Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical responded to the fire at Mass Street Hookah, 1029 Mass., about 7 a.m.

“The fire originated around an ice machine that caused the water coolant line to rupture and extinguish the fire much like a fire sprinkler system,” fire spokeswoman Eve Tolefree said in a news release. She said the cause of the fire hadn’t been determined.

An emergency dispatcher said other buildings downtown had reported an odor of light smoke but no damage.

A portion of Massachusetts Street was shut down during the fire fight.
