Independence Inc. has been selected by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services to receive Food Assistance Program funds.

The goal of the Food Assistance Program is to end hunger and improve the nutrition and health of low-income Kansas households.

Independence Inc., 2001 Haskell Ave., will be reaching out to low-income families in Douglas, Jefferson, Franklin, Shawnee and Leavenworth counties. According to SRS, only 43 percent of eligible residents in Douglas County are participating in the program.

Anyone with low income who does not have enough food to last through the month may be eligible. It can be a temporary benefit for a person who is unemployed or a permanent benefit for people on fixed income. People who work but have low income also may be eligible.

Independence Inc. has trained staff available to help people with the application process. Independence Inc. also has a dedicated computer terminal so people can apply online.
