More than 1,600 runners are expected to hit the streets of Lawrence Sunday morning to raise money for Lawrence Health Care Access, a charitable clinic for the uninsured.

“All of the causes here, they all line up. Obviously, Health Care Access, their mission is to provide health services to Douglas County, and providing a health and fitness activity, it matches up with that well,” said Ryan Robinson, the race director for the Lynn Electric Kansas Half Marathon.

The half marathon begins at 7 a.m. at South Park, and it ends near the Lied Center at Kansas University’s West Campus. Robinson said more than 1,100 people had registered as of Wednesday morning, and he expected hundreds more to sign up in coming days.

Organizers hope to offer a full marathon in 2010.

Key traffic control points during the race will be along Massachusetts Street until 8:45 a.m., near Ninth and Mississippi streets and the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Kasold Drive later in the morning.

Here’s a rundown of the race route:

• Begins at 7:30 a.m. at South Park near 12th and Massachusetts streets, and heads north to Seventh Street.

• West on Seventh Street to Mississippi Street.

• South on Mississippi Street across Ninth Street and up the Mississippi Street hill on the KU campus.

• West onto Memorial Drive, passing the Campanile and Chi Omega Fountain before heading west on Crescent Road.

• South on Engel Road by the KU residence halls and then crossing the bridge and running south through West Campus.

• At Iowa Street and Clinton Parkway, runners will head west along the bike and running trail. They will also run through residential areas, like Jenny Wren Road and Inverness Drive and Carmel Drive near the Alvamar Country and Golf Club.

• Runners will return to Clinton Parkway and run east to Iowa Street, where they finish heading north on the Iowa Street bike path. The race ends near the Lied Center.

Shuttles will be available to take runners back to South Park.

For people who don’t want to run the full 13.1 miles, there’s also a 10K, which is 6.2 miles, or a 5K, 3.1 miles. The other races will begin at 7:45 a.m. at South Park.

Registration is available online. Runners can also register in person from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Garry Gribble’s Running Sports, 839 Mass., or from 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday at the South Park Gazebo before the race.
