Pelathe fundraisers to benefit food bank

The Pelathe Community Resource Center will host fundraisers this month and over the rest of the summer to help reopen the center’s food bank.

The Pelathe Center started in 1971 to benefit the American lndian/indigenous people in Douglas County. The food bank opened in 2005 and had helped 2,556 people before it shut down last year because of lack of funds.

Fundraisers include:

l Talent show, Easter Hunt and potluck dinner in conjunction with Haskell University’s Haskell Voices, noon to 3 p.m. today, Pelathe Center, 1423 Haskell Ave.

l Warm-up powwow with Haskell Powwow Committee, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, Haskell Gazebo, off Barker and Indian avenues.

The center is also working on grant proposals with Haskell Indian Nations University and Kansas University for a community garden, cooking and food preparation programs, and cultural programs for American Indian youths.
