Alferd Packer Memorial String Band to play at post office tax party
As inevitable as both death and taxes, members of the Alferd Packer Memorial String band will gather downtown next week to mark the end of income tax season.
For the 23rd consecutive year, the band will entertain taxpayers and others April 15 at Lawrence’s Main Post Office, 645 Vt.
Unlike the early years — when the band belted out the “William Tell Overture” just before the stroke of midnight, as last-minute tax filers raced to make the IRS filing deadline — this year’s party will start at 5 p.m. and go until 8 p.m.
The band will play the overture just before 5:30 p.m., the post office’s closing time in recent years as the U.S. Postal Service moved to cut costs.
Organizers invite “old-time” musicians to stop by and join in with the overture and also play “contra” dances — to be called by Mike Rundle — beginning at 7 p.m.
The party is free and open to the public. To see video of past tax parties, visit www.AlferdPackerBand.com.
