Flu vaccine facts

To the editor:

Flu season is coming up and accurate scientific information is necessary to make informed decisions. Information that is not referenced by scientific studies is at best an opinion; although well intentioned, it is still just an opinion. If one does a search on the Internet, be wary of opinions; they are very common.

1. The intramuscular vaccine is very effective and safe. Many scientific studies verify this fact. The CDC and AAP highly recommends vaccination of all children over 6 months old.

2. Two studies in children showed a 40 percent reduction in otitis media in children following vaccination. Another showed an 80 percent reduction of the common cold by vaccinating the entire family. This vaccine uniquely improves the body's natural immunity.

3. Mercury is only used in multiple-entry bottles. Our office has not used a multi-dose vial this century. Mercury has been outlawed in pediatrics since 2001.

4. FluMist is superior to the injectable vaccine and has no mercury. As a nasal spray, needle phobia is bypassed. The FluMist provides 10 months, not three, and has 50 percent fewer breakthrough cases after immunization compared to the IM form. No vaccine is 100 percent effective - more like 90 percent.

5. Flu deaths are not uncommon. We had a beautiful young mother die of the flu last winter, and a family in Kansas City is starting a pro-flu vaccine group because they lost a child last winter to the flu.

I hope the above information is helpful and increases flu vaccinations in Lawrence.

Dr. Terrance P. Riordan,
Lawrence

This story will be disputed at any minute by those who think the flu can be prevented by wrapping their tinfoil hats tighter...

Thimerosal has never been banned in pediatric or any vaccines ever in the US. Pediatric flu vaccines in multi-dose vials do contain thimerosal. So, Dr. Riordan you must carry thimerosal-free vaccines? Those, are awfully hard to come by I hear. And they cost more too.Do you know why over 90% of the flu vaccines produced last year (and probably this year too) come in multi-dose vials ? It's because it's cheaper for the manufacturer to make them. Speaking of money, you probably depend on a lot of people coming into your office to get an annual flu shot this year, and well every year? That's how you make your money right Dr? You're running a business afterall. Even though you are a doctor you are running a business and you are selling something and you need people to think they need to have what you are selling. Many "flu" studies are funded by pharmaceutical companies. The same pharmaceutical companies that produce the vaccines. No wonder we see such great results! It's all business. So, for the simple fact that you are peddling something doesn't make you any more credible in your "facts" then the first letter that appeared in this paper about the flu shot. Actually, since you have a "reason" (i.e financial gain) maybe I do believe the first letter writer a little more. Nothing personal, I'm sure you're a nice person.

Kmat and XD40-I'm so sorry I don't share the "doctors are GODS" belief you have. I believe the flu scare is just that- a made up scare to give people a worthless vaccine to make more profits for vaccine manufacturers. 36,000 deaths is a totally fabricated number. Why is it the same number every year? If more people are getting vaccinated shouldn't the number go down? Did you know there is research that states if you get an annual flu shot for several years in a row you are increasing your chances of developing Alzheimer's disease?

Damage done? Take a look at some images from CDC of those who DID get vaccinated with the small pox vaccine: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/Agent/Smallpox/VaccineImages.aspDon't forget to look at what if someone close to you gets vaccinated:http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/smallpox/vaccination/close-contacts.aspSounds like getting vaccinated "is extremely anti-social"!And especially don't forget to read http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/smallpox/vaccination/reactions-vacc-public.aspFunny they say 1000 out of 1 million will experience a "serious" reaction. Unless my math skills fail me, that is the same as 1 out of 1000.Sores on your genitals or face. Sometimes all over. Blindness. Or more "rarely" (hmmm?): Widespread eczema or atopic dermatitis. Ongoing infection of skin with tissue destruction frequently leading to death. Inflammation of the brain."it is estimated that between 1 and 2 people out of every 1 million people vaccinated may die"Are you familiar with the VAERS reporting system? http://www.medalerts.org/Take a look at the yearly summary, or do a basic search yourself. Maybe even search for "flu" vaccine.Allow people to make their own choices. Choices to not be harmed. But, some will want to force their tin hats on everyone. Observe the differences.

"The intramuscular vaccine is very effective and safe."According to CDC, http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/basic/history.htm,"however, no vaccine is 100% safe or effective."The same link has information on the VAERS reporting system and an injury compensation program. One wonders if Dr. Riordan has read the vaccine inserts to make such a statement. Maybe "intramuscular" makes a difference? However, I question his #4, "and has 50 percent fewer breakthrough cases. No vaccine is 100 percent effective - more like 90 percent.". Does this mean he is saying 90% is "very effective"?"Our office has not used a multi-dose vial this century."Well good for him! I'll give him credit for that."Mercury has been outlawed in pediatrics since 2001."Ooops. According to http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/thimerosal.htm:"Since 2001, with the exception of some influenza (flu) vaccines, thimerosal is not used as a preservative in routinely recommended childhood vaccines."And previous reading shows emphasis on "routinely".If anyone thinks everyone should be vaccinated, better consider if the "refuge" crop concept in agriculture is good science or not. If you are not familiar with that, here's some help: http://www.bt.ucsd.edu/crop_refuge.htmlWere smallpox and polio vaccinations successful? Was the whole world vaccinated? According tohttp://www.relfe.com/vaccine.html, under Myth #3, some European countries refused. Not being a sheeple and thinking for myself, it is highly improbably the whole world could be vaccinated. If smallpox disappeared and not everyone was vaccinated, it would be reasonable to ask the question, WHY? Maybe something else was going on."a recent World Health Organization report which found that the disease and mortality rates in third world countries have no direct correlation with immunization procedures or medical treatment, but are closely related to the standard of hygiene and diet. [27] Credit given to vaccinations for our current disease incidence has simply been grossly exaggerated, if not outright misplaced."But, I agree, there was a big promotion in attempting to vaccinate the whole world:http://www.vaccinationnews.com/dailynews/July2002/Smallpox7.htm"The worst smallpox disaster occurred in the Philippines, after 10 years (1911-1920) of a compulsory U.S. program which administered 25 million vaccinations to its population of 10 million.""Public education" by vaccine producers and their supporters always omits self-incriminating facts."

the_original, I agree and it's sad because all he's doing is informing people. He's not telling people they HAVE to go get one, just putting out the facts. I don't know a lot of doctors that would even take the time out of the day to do that. Thanks Dr. Riordan, we appreciate you!

Deja Coffin 6 years, 2 months ago

That's why I'm glad my girls go to Dr. Riordan. He's a doctor that actually cares to not only look at the facts but get the facts out there for the common people to know. We'll be seeing him here pretty soon for our flu shots.

"numerous facts"?All you with your tinfoil hats of vaccinations going to stop you from getting some disease, why not use some thinking, if you can?If smallpox was supposedly exliminated as XD40 so says, why hasn't polio been eliminated? Weren't they both intended to vaccinate the "whole world"?Have you searched the VAERS database yourself? There are lots of people suffering. If you have a healthy baby, give them a vaccination, and within 2 days they end up in the hospital, it would appear to me that something is related to the vaccination. Here's another thought for you tinfoil vaccine people:If vaccines have a certain percentage of "effectiveness", how is that determined?Think on that, if your tinfoil hat isn't interfering with your thought processes. But, you don't think for yourselves, but only take a "the vaccine manufacturers told me..."I realize Dr. Riordan wasn't trying to force anyone to get vaccinated in his letter, but some others here are wanting to. Otherwise, I could care less if you want to wear your tinfoil hat in the form of vaccination. Your choice. But it is even mandated for kids to be vaccinated for chicken pox. Can you believe that? And vaccinated individuals still get it.How about presenting some facts of comparing number of cases before and after.Take a read of this from a copy of The Washington Post.http://www.whale.to/vaccines/polio5.htmlDon't expect the tinfoil hat sheeple to read it, but maybe some thinking people will be able to make their own choices. No one is against people thinking and making their own choices are they?

"No one is against people thinking and making their own choices are they?"Believe me, gr, nobody here is going to object in the slightest to your right to catch a fatal case of the flu.

I used to get sick every time I got near anyone that had even thought about the flu. About 8 years ago I started getting the vaccine and have not had the flu since. I even had pnemonia one year (used to always get bronchitis twice a year) and was given a vaccine for that and have never had pnemonia or bronchitis again.Kell - many people go to the health dept's flu shot clinics to get these vaccines, not the doctors. I think it's sad that you are accusing this doctor of just trying to make money.thank you Dr. for your article.

My great- great grandmother bore 10 children, only three survived the many childhood diseases that routinely killed babies only a few generations ago. According to my own mother who told me that in her mother's generation, it was said that if a baby lived beyond the second summer, the family could take a small sign of relief. We are extremely fortunate to now have the antibiotics, immunizations, that prevent these terrible childhood diseases (whooping cough, polio, diptheria, measels, and many more) I understand the parents' concerns about vaccinations, flu shots, etc. but the consequences of not getting these diseases are so much worse to the children and to the babies who are too young to get the prescribed shots if they come in contact with a contagious, un-immunized child. Yes, I am aware of the controversies in relation to vaccines and autistic children. I'm not convinced though. I am getting my flu shot for the first time this year and Dr. Riorden's comments gave me more confidence to do it and encourage my children and grandchildren to do so. Thanks Dr. Riorden for your letter.

People in high-risk catagories should get the vaccine, but as a young, healthy male, I choose not to get one. My immune system needs the exercise every year :)

This doctor claims that the post he is responding to is all opinion and no facts. Well, what does he think his post is??. It's all opinion. Where are his facts? Where are the studies he mentions? Also a few things he states as fact are simply not true. In 1999, the CDC recommended that thimerosal be removed from vaccines-it was only a recommendation and never became a law. Sadly it was removed very slowly from some of the vaccines and ones with copious amounts of thimerosal were still not dated and sitting on doctor's selves and used -well through 2005.11 children and young adult vaccines still carry high amounts of mercury(thimerosal) and others have what they call trace amounts, which themselves contain higher amounts than the FDA claims as to be safe amounts-amounts higher than they allow in our water. 90% of the flu vaccines contain 25 micrograms of thimerosal-he may not use them , but others do.Since he doesn't include studies he comments on I won't either. Many stuides are now linking mercury and aluminum in vaccines not only to autism and other child immune illnesses, but also to the rise in alzheimers.Vaccines of any kind have never been proved safe and certainly not the combinations they give. The flu is highly overrated in this country. The 36,000 deaths that the CDC quotes every year has been used for over 20 years and is ridiculous. In the 2007-08 flu season even the CDC admitted they made a mistake on the viruses they used in the vaccine and who is to say it won't be wrong again. Flu clinics in drug stores, departments stores, gas stations or whereever the heck they give them-are illegal.

"Well, what does he think his post is??. It's all opinion. Where are his facts?"Well XD40 thought there were facts. But then, XD40 thinks last year's flu was comparable to the flu of 1918.Want an opinion? It is my opinion that XD40 conned Riordan into writing a letter to the editor and making himself look foolish.=========granny, back when your great-great grandma was losing all the babies, was that before they had screens on the windows and other sanitary things? Do you know what "confounding" means?Try to think a little. Did we always have flu vaccines available? Were babies dying shortly before vaccinations were available? Are babies dying today which are not vaccinated? Then, I bet you didn't check the VAERS database and see how many are dying, harmed, and being maimed due to vaccines, did you?"I am getting my flu shot for the first time this year"And you have every right to. Maybe you could also take Mercury chloride or strychnine of old. Just don't try to force the rest of us to harm our bodies and children.============How about presenting some facts? One I'd like to see someone stumble over but which I doubt anyone will try is:How is the effectiveness of vaccinations determined?Surely this is a reasonable question.

Most vaccines also contain aluminum. Using the numbers from “Addressing Parents’ Concerns: Do Vaccines Cause Allergic or Autoimmune Diseases? by Paul A. Offit, MD* and Charles J. Hackett, PhD” - The risk of asthma from one childhood vaccination is 1%. Since most children get more than one vaccination…. 15 vaccinations would give a 15% risk of getting asthma? There are other problems with the vaccines. Food is often used in the culture medium and food oils used in the vaccine adjuvant. Trace amounts of food protein can remain in the vaccine. These ingredients do not have to appear on the vaccine package insert. (Protected trade secret)If you read patents for culture mediums and vaccine adjuvants, you will find everything from powdered skim milk, eggs, beef, to peanut, soy, sesame, fish, and shellfish oils.Since none of these ingredients must appear on the label, doctors have no idea that they may be injecting peanut oil into a peanut-allergic patient. Most vaccine studies only study the effect of one vaccine and ignore the rest. It is kinda like sticking 14 nails in someone’s foot and only taking out one. Then saying that since the foot still hurts this nail didn’t cause a problem and is relatively safe to stick into people’s feet.
