Area gardeners will be able to get free compost from the city today and Saturday.

Lawrence’s Solid Waste Division will conduct its compost giveaway from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the composting facility at 1420 E. 11th St. The event will continue from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The compost – which is similar to high-quality topsoil – is made of organic materials such as leaves and grass clippings that city solid waste crews collect from Lawrence homes.

The compost is recommended for use as organic material to improve lawns and flower beds.
