“Mark’s on the Move” is a new feature segment as 6News anchor/reporter Mark Boyle searches for the often untold and overlooked stories in our community. This is a great chance for you the viewer to weigh in on and add to the stories that we are unable to cover through our daily news coverage.

Blogging on the Move

This week “Mark’s on the move” takes us to Haskell Indian Nations University. Spending several hours following around the grounds crew, we learned much more about the weekly field preparation prior to the three football games played at Haskell Stadium. Although they won’t admit it, these grounds crewworkers truly are the unsung heroes behind every football game. Whether they are watering, rolling, replacing divots, or stringing and lining the field every week, they take a lot of pride in their work as they should.

When we spoke to Quentin Haynes, sophomore running back for Haskell, he told us the team takes notice of the field conditions throughout the game. They must be doing something right for the running back to notice the lines he is running over during the game.

Not only do the grounds crewmen work on the football field, getting it ready to play, but they also take care of the rest of the university grounds. Fittingly, they tell us that the 100-yard field is the most important stretch of grass on all of the property.

Following this story, and hearing theirs, I have much more respect for the pregame preparations than I ever have before. Our thanks again to Charles Hopkins, Wayne Thompson, Willie Ogden and Quentin Haynes for helping us with this story.
