De Soto schools briefly go into lockdown

De Soto High School and the middle school were locked down for less than a half hour Wednesday morning as Johnson County Sheriff’s officers searched for a man threatening suicide.

Master Deputy Tom Erickson said the lockdown was precautionary, and the schools reopened at 7:30 a.m.

Deputies took an 18-year-old De Soto man into custody for a mental health evaluation. Erickson said the man threatened suicide, had cut himself and left his home with a knife.

“There were no threats to the school and the lock down was precautionary only,” Erickson said.

No criminal charges are currently pending.
