KU Youth Chorus seeks members

Kansas University’s Youth Chorus is seeking new members for the 2008-2009 school year.

KUYC is a group of nonauditioned children grades four through eight who rehearse once a week. KUYC is a choral experience for students who want to learn a variety of music, hone their singing skills and perform in front of a live audience.

The choir is directed by founder Debra Hedden, KU associate professor of music education and music therapy, and her music education graduate and undergraduate students. Hedden created the KUYC in 2005 to offer singing opportunities for interested children and to provide KU music education majors the chance to enhance their conducting and rehearsal skills.

There are no auditions associated with KUYC. The members of the chorus will be expected to attend regular weekly rehearsals throughout the year and participate in a spring concert on May 7, 2009.

The child and a parent or parent representative (guardian, grandparent, close friend) must attend the kick-off meeting at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Murphy Hall, Room 328. The membership cost is $50 and must be paid in full that day.

Rehearsals will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. most Thursdays throughout the school year.

To register, please e-mail Hedden at dhedden@ku.edu. Membership is limited to 75 students and is on a first-come basis.
