To the editor:

Apparently Lawrence High needs a new 4,500-seat football stadium and Kansas University Athletics needs a new 10,000-seat track.

Why not combine the two projects?

The money the school district intends to spend on a new 4,500-seat stadium could go toward the 10,000-seat facility at the nearby KU site. This would greatly help KU athletics in funding the new track.

LHS plays only a handful of games at home each year. KU has the Kansas Relays once a year. There would be few, if any, scheduling conflicts. It might even be possible for the Red Dog conditioning program to use the facility.

Combining the two would mitigate many of the concerns of LHS neighbors, e.g. parking and drainage.

It would demonstrate that KU Athletics really can cooperate with the local community on projects that are in the best interest of both.

It would maximize the use of scarce resources.
