Energy action
To the editor:
Sunday’s Lawrence Journal-World business page had an article stating the federal Transportation Department is almost out of funds due to high gasoline prices, which reduces fuel usage and tax revenues, thus delaying badly needed payments to state road and bridge projects. The actions of environmentalists to stop new oil drilling, clean coal and nuclear power plants combined with lack of action by Congress on an effective energy policy is coming home to roost. These actions continue to shock our economy and expose our national security vulnerability.
Gov. Sarah Palin has shown real leadership on the most important issue facing our nation, energy independence and lower fuel costs. She got the Alaska Legislature to agree to a new natural-gas pipeline that was 30 years in the works, forcing oil companies into action and limiting their influence in Alaska. Thirteen leases were pulled because of lack of production. She implemented oil company taxes and issued rebates to Alaskans in spite of oil company threats.
She shows what can be accomplished at the state and local level when real leadership takes charge.
The constant attacks on Palin show why we get nothing important accomplished. These personal attacks against her are over nothing while the important issue of helping solve the most important issue of today goes ignored.
It is time to set the partisanship aside and act in the best interest of our country developing a comprehensive energy policy.
David Reynolds,
Lawrence
