City soccer showdown rescheduled

Free State's JV tennis canceled, as well

It was supposed to give one of the city high schools an early lead in the quest for the World Company Cup.

Instead, Mother Nature won.

Today’s Lawrence High-Free State boys soccer contest, scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m., has been canceled and rescheduled for Oct. 20.

Free State coach Jason Pendleton announced that the game was called off at 12:18 p.m., citing an already saturated field as the reason.

Next for LHS (2-1) is a Monday contest at Youth Sports Inc., against Olathe East. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Firebirds (1-0-1) next match is a 7 p.m. tilt Tuesday at Olathe Northwest.

In addition, the Free State junior varsity tennis match against Topeka High and the LHS C-team boys soccer game versus Blue Valley North also have been canceled because of rain. No make-up dates have been announced for those events.
