In-depth coverage of the candidates and the issues, all leading up to the Aug. 5 primary and the Nov. 4 general election.

Barack Obama's campaign is reigniting its campaign in Lawrence, as part of its plan to raise support for the Democratic candidate in every state. The Obama headquarters officially opens today at the Douglas County Democratic Party's headquarters at 925 Iowa, beneath Crimson and Brews.

Obama supporters - and even those who are just curious about the candidate - are invited to participate in a neighborhood canvass and a phone bank from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The campaign will make calls to voters every day for the next 60 days, and will canvass local neighborhoods every weekend until the election.

John Wilson, Democratic candidate for the state House of Representatives in the 45th District, will join Obama supporters today.

The campaign had staffers in Lawrence from October to February, leaving the area after the Feb. 5 primaries.

Easy now, Confrontation.Only people who can't muster up an intelligent argument fall back on name-calling.So, leave that to the republicans because they certainly don't have a leg to stand on.You know, I'd find their Christian extremist, big-government message a bit more credible if they'd just come out and admit that they're really a fanatical religious organization. 800-lb gorilla, anyone?As long as they can have their guns, strip us of our rights, and force us to live our lives “the Christian way”, then *we* won't get branded as being 'unpatriotic'…or worse, locked up in prison. I think that's really where they want us. You know, and when the people in charge of salaries dip into your pocket and keep more and more of it for themselves in the name of “competition” and empty promises of future jobs…that's called stealing. So, their captalistic argument, their “American Dream” is false. You didn't earn that. You just took it because you had the power to and for some reason you feel like you need 7 houses.I don't really see anybody other than Republicans jumping around, screeching, and throwing “mud” at their adversaries. But I guess what they lack in evolution, they more than make up for with breeding, unfortunately.

As the mother of a child who is half-African-American, I am saddened and appalled at the coldness, the hate, and the sheer mean being put forth by the racists. I judge Obama by the quality of his character, not by the color of his skin. He will continue to get people to participate in the life of thier country. Opening headquarters in Lawrence where Obama is already supported heavily is like preaching to the choir. Pointless, unless he feels he has to go where the larger crowds can be seen cheering him on. Why not open headquarters in Colby, or Wichita or maybe Hoxie where support is much lower. These are the places that need converted, otherwise his rave reviews from Douglas and Wyandotte counties mean nothing in a state that will be carried by McCain.
