Telling choices

September 4, 2008

To the editor:

While many social conservatives talk the talk, vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin walks the walk and, at age 44, has an infant with Down syndrome and a pregnant 17-year-old daughter to prove it. This is not just because she opposes abortion (including rape and incest cases) but because she also opposes sex education in schools about any subject other than abstinence, including crucial topics such as contraception. Apparently, that goes for home also. Next we can try out her views on teaching creationism in the schools and see if we can't produce a generation of science illiterates.

Of greater concern, these positions and the need to solidify his social conservative base were reportedly the deciding factors in 72-year-old John McCain's choosing her to be his running mate and, if elected, to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. It certainly couldn't be her other qualifications: small-town mayor and governor of Alaska for only 20 months. So much for "Country First" and the experience argument. I guess that's what you get with a risk-taker as president, along with the occasional unnecessary war.

Barack Obama may not have extensive experience either, but at least he has demonstrated judgment in selecting Joe Biden, and has been vetted over 18 months by 18 million voters, not just by two brief conversations.

Oh well, at least we have some idea of how a President McCain would go about choosing replacements to the Supreme Court. Who says elections don't count?

Dr. - A classic example of writing a letter before you heard the person speak. The Governor will make the kind of change I can vote for. Listen to her speech she gave at the RNC and then reread your letter. Embarassed?

ilovelucy 9 years, 8 months ago

Dr. Bruner's letter was dead on correct and he should be commended.Restore, Yes, she's a dynamic speaker. She's a trained television personality who has sarcastic wit down to a T. Her speech was sparkling and gay last night.Did she address one issue except to bash her opponents? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I still can't think of anything that she said that had relevance to an issue, except likening a hockey mom to a pit bull.Ahhhhhhhhh, just what we need. A pit bull!

kansas778 9 years, 8 months ago

Scott, rude to whom? To the audience that was cheering her on? Grasping at straws only makes you look silly.

ilovelucy 9 years, 8 months ago

Every minute. Maybe you consider mocking and sarcasm as dealing with the issues?

Deb Stavin 9 years, 8 months ago

I agree with Dr. Bruner. Palin is dangerous. The public needs to know that Gov. Palin raised taxes, heartily supported the Bridge to Nowhere before she opposed it, pursued pork-barrel projects when she was mayor, tried to ban books at the local library and believes the war in Iraq is "a task from God." Until I heard her speech I didn't think any candidates could offer a worse scenario for the U.S. than Bush/Cheney. I was wrong.

"Dr. Bruner, you perfectly fulfill the elite liberal role::your comments are "telling"."Tell us Tom, when you go to the doctor, do you seek someone who has an elite level of training, knowledge or skill. Or do you choose based on looks? Or maybe you choose based on the person holding the same beliefs as you do? Myself, as I have said here many times, I'll take the smartest person I can get.

Palin was even doing the beauty queen wave at the crowd last night. The ball is spinning, but the hampster is dead.

This gentleman attended the U.S. Naval Academy with John McCain. He graduated in the top 25% of his class. (unlike McCain, who was fifth from the bottom). He was awarded Two Silver Stars, Two Bronze Stars, Two Legions of Merit, Two Purple hearts, and like John McCain, he flew in Viet Nam, was shot down and captured, and was a fellow prisoner of war. This is what he feels about McCain's candidacy for POUSA: (video)http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/03/fellow-navy-pow-speaks-about

If you are waiting for republicans to address current issues that affect all Americans then you should not hold your breath. They don't know how.

"The Governor will make the kind of change I can vote for. Listen to her speech she gave at the RNC and then reread your letter. Embarassed?"I don't know the Dr. but my guess is he is not. She came off as overly rude, lacking in any degree of humility and just downright distasteful. We all know her type. Personally I cannot stand her overly ambitious, back stabbing, ungracious type. If I were Gramps, I'd think about getting a food tester.

Unfit mother, hardly. Unfit to be vice-president, absolutely.McCain has cheapened the political process by putting this inexperienced individual on his ticket as a sop to the right-wing yahoos in his party. Let's not debase it further by injecting tabloid issues about her family life into a debate in which her record and policy statements will discredit her sufficiently. Nor, as in the reference by Sychophant, should we try to "swift boat" McCain himself. Demos can probably afford to take the high road in this campaign, and ought to do so.

GW Bush and Reagan are examples of republican executive experience:There is a lot of shallow talk about executive experience and little substance on policy coming from Palin or McCain. Like the GW Bush campaign performance in 2000 and 2004.Plenty of shallow talk about executive experience associated with being a governor. "Check your facts, RR. Biden got 79,754 votes in his short campaign, while Palin received 909 votes in her 1999 mayor race and 651 in 1996That maybe trun, but you liberals forget whe was elected to the Governor's Office, with hundreds of thousands of votes in Alaska.Like Gingrich stated, why do you guys miss the big stuff.Palin is WAY more experienced that Obama. He has written 2 memiors, but authored NO legislation, "Helping" and "sponsoring" is not "authoring".Additionally the only "bipartsian" thing Obama did, was with McCain, but Obama sold McCain down the river, and bent to the will og the Senate Democraps. So there is NO RECORD of Obama being "bipartisian".Palin is the real deal, even if Gloria Stienam doesn't like.

Dr. Bruner, do you have something against fertility? Is so, maybe it's time for you to look for a new line of work. If contraception works, then why are there still so many abortions? According to Alan Guttmacher Institute, 54% of U.S. women who had an abortion in 2000 were using a method in the month they became pregnant. Are you suggesting that Gov. Palin should have had an abortion instead of giving birth to a Down Syndrome child?

Dr. Bruner,Although at times I have felt your bedside manner to be lacking, I never questioned your ability as a doctor. Then, when you saved my daughter by delivering her as an emergency c-section- I felt I owed you my life and continuously express my gratitude for you. Now, I know where you stand... and have to say THANK YOU! Thank you for knowing that children and young adults are curious little people indeed and if we choose to teach our children nothing but abstinence- it will result in not only more children having children, but also more STD's and more abortions. Personally, as a Hilary supporter, I am thrilled that a woman is on the final ticket, but her views scare me! Anyone who would want to make it illigal to get an abortion after the traumatic event of being raped or molested... well, it's just wrong. Every day that child/woman would have to look at that child knowing and remembering (If not re-living) those awful events, OR they would have to carry to term and give the child away- pain and agony if you ask me. As for her down-syndrome child, that was her choice. If she has the ability, love and patience to raise a special needs child- good for her. Some people just don't have it. But it is a personal decision that families would have to make.As for other issues- She is for drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife refuge... I am against that. She does not feel the polar bear is worth putting on the endangered wildlife list- because the area's that the polar bear are would mean no drilling.. which would mean no oil for her. Shame on her.She believes we should teach creationism in the classroom... what happened to the separation of church and state? Don't we have religous based schools to teach these things? What about other religions beliefs? Although I am of another religion, I am not for saying we should teach ANY particuliar religion in the classroom. That is best left for home and church. (flying spaghetti monster!!)And there are many (many) more issues.Result... I probably will not vote for McCain/Palin..And although Sen. Obama and I disagree on some things... his views are more like mine. Thanks again Dr. Bruner. It's good to know my doctor's office knows the real issues in the world.

Charlie Dominguez 9 years, 8 months ago

Why does the general public feel that contraception has to be taught in schools? Why don't we teach our children at home; when the parents feel it is appropriate. Just another sign that Democrats feel the govt should solve the irresponsibilities of some parents. I am so tired of always having to pick up the pieces for those who are irresponsible. And to hang an OMG to Palin just because her daughter got pregnant...get real.I am a Democrat, but I am voting for McCain, because he is a proven leader. I went to Denver just to see Obama, and yes he can put on a show....but I don't gamble with my money and I sure the heck am not going to gamble with my country.

"McCain voted in the Senate 90% for Bush policies"I've seen this tired line way too much. Everyone votes along party lines at essentially the same rate. Lieberman voted on the Dem line over 90% of the time and his wonderfully loyal party tried to run him out last election 'cuz he backed the war. Brilliant. Progressives and the B/B camp wail about 'fear' tactics from conservatives, but who do they think they're kidding when they go out of their way to tie McCain to Bush = BushCo = McSame = Bush's third term = quack quack quack. "He backed the Iraq War!!!!" Sorry folks, they all did, from Slick Willy to Hillary, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Edwards and the band plays on. I've got a wonderful little tape of them all railing on national TV, starting in '98, of how there was no doubt that Saddam had WMD's, and voluntary disarmement was not an option. Spare me the 'Bush lied' crappola, such revisionist history is a farce, and it's been verified by a Dem led investigative committee. Put it in your pipe and smoke it. And find something meaningful to post, coltrane, or go back to your video games.

Liliannasmom07 9 years, 8 months ago

We have to teach them in the classrooms because some parents won't or feel too uncomfortable talking with their kids about it. Some feel that 3rd graders are too young to know that a man and woman have different parts and what comes of having sex. But you would be suprised how many kids are being caught on school grounds in elementary schools making out. Kids are curious. Fill them with knowledge of STD's and how to prevent them and at least they are protected.

"Check your facts, RR. Biden got 79,754 votes in his short campaign, while Palin received 909 votes in her 1999 mayor race and 651 in 1996."Asbestos tried to backtrack, "That maybe trun, but you liberals forget whe was elected to the Governor's Office, with hundreds of thousands of votes in Alaska."The speaker referred specifically to Palin's MAYORAL races and said nothing about her election to her 20-month-young governorship. So the question is, does Asbestos stand by that lying speaker, or will Asbestos take him to task for lying?See http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080904/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_fact_check for brief rundown of more GOP ("Good Ol' Prevaricators") lies.
