Police Web site provides safety tips for students

Lawrence police are reaching out to local college students to help keep them out of danger and out of legal trouble while they’re in town.

The city’s law enforcement agency on Wednesday released a list that includes ways to avoid becoming a victim of burglary, sexual assault and identity theft, as well as a list of tips to avoid the most commonly violated laws.

The most common student-related arrests involve alcohol, police said. Operating under the influence, driving with an open container of alcohol and urinating in public are among the common offenses police are informing students about.

“We would hate for their hard work in college to be tarnished by an arrest while they’re in Lawrence,” said Sgt. Bill Cory, Lawrence police spokesman.

In the list, published on the Lawrence Police Department’s Web site, police also inform students that they face eviction if they receive more than one noise ordinance violation, that littering isn’t allowed and that parking violations in the city are strictly enforced.

Students are also given helpful tips about preventing car and home burglaries, as well as identity theft, which police say is a growing problem in Lawrence and across the nation.

In addition, the Web site gives students a lengthy list of ways to help prevent date rape and stranger rape.

Police advise students to decide on their personal sexual limits and communicate them clearly to their date. Students are also told to stay alert at home, on the street and in their cars, to avoid stranger rape, but Cory said students shouldn’t be unreasonably scared.

“Sometimes students come from smaller towns,” he said. “Lawrence is a little bit bigger of a town, where things like this can happen. So, they just need to be more aware of their surroundings.”
