Athletic plans

To the editor:

A few years back, when the school board voted to close the very effective and successful Centennial School, those of us in the neighborhood knew there were designs on the nice expanse of open green grassy space associated with the school. After all, it was wasted on those elementary school children, who don’t put on big shows to entertain the public. We expected it to become athletic fields. Now, after a decent wait to let sentiments die down, they are moving forward with what we all knew was behind this. A decent expanse of artificial turf and asphalt parking lots.

Isn’t that what the community needs so much more than a nice recreation area for young children?
