Service gaps

To the editor:

Some people may think that the university bus system (KU on Wheels) is sufficient for Lawrence and there is no need for the city to run its own system (the T). I would like to point out a few facts:

¢ KU on Wheels does not operate on Saturdays. The T does.

¢ KU on Wheels does not operate when the university is on break. This includes three weeks between fall and spring semesters. The T operates year-round.

¢ KU on Wheels does not provide service to several important places, including Haskell Indian Nations University, Free State High School, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Wal-Mart. The T serves all of these places.

I urge voters to approve the two sales tax proposals for the T on Nov. 4 (Questions 2 and 3). I hope that KU on Wheels and the T will coordinate their routes and that eventually a merger of the two systems will occur.
