A public good

To the editor:

I moved to Lawrence from New York City two years ago. The reason I love this city is because of the way people in our community care for each other. While I have never ridden the T, I support all efforts to save public transportation because it is a vital service for members of our community. Our public transportation is a public good.

Public transportation is also a key component of building a more sustainable Lawrence, not only in terms of mitigating carbon emissions, but in regards to conservation of nonrenewable resources and reduction of dependence on foreign oil. If we want to become a leader in attracting green and sustainable businesses to Lawrence, we must demonstrate that we are authentically committed to the cause.

I recognize we all have competing priorities and great budgetary concerns. That said, please consider what an impact your vote will have; 25 cents for every $100 spent is a negligible sum. The cost of trying to resurrect a bus system at a later point in time (were it to disappear) would be significantly higher.

Please vote “yes” to Questions 2 and 3.
