Democrats spending most in county races

Democratic candidates for the Douglas County Commission were outraising and outspending their Republican counterparts, according to campaign finance reports.

The reports filed with the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission cover the three-month period from July 25 through Oct. 23.

In the District 2 race, Democrat Nancy Thellman had raised $8,035. She already had $6,280. She spent $13,518 and had $796 cash on hand.

She loaned herself $1,000, and received $500 from John Pozdro of Lawrence and John Haase and Lyn Chase of Lecompton.

Republican David Brown raised $4,245. He already had $53. He spent $3,442 and had $856 cash on hand.

His top contributors were S-Holdings LLC of Lawrence, $400; and $300 each from James Martin and William Winger, both of Baldwin City.

In the District 3 race, Democrat Ken Grotewiel spent $14,535 during the reporting period. He already had $456. He raised $14,379 and had $298 cash on hand.

His top contributors were $500 each from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ Bluestem Fund, Marguerite Ermeling of Lawrence and Marion Cutler of Topeka.

Republican James Flory spent $7,594. He had $1,263 from earlier and raised an additional $8,435. He ended up with $2,104 cash on hand.

He loaned his campaign $600 and his top contributors included $500 each from Augusta Flory of Lawrence, N.R. Hamm Contractor Inc. of Perry, Hamm Asphalt Inc. of Perry and N.R. Hamm Quarry Inc. of Perry.
