Honorable ride
To the editor:
When we semi-retired in 2004, one of the reasons we chose to move to Lawrence was the T. Our real estate agent helped us find the perfect house within walking distance of the T.
Public transportation is very important to us since Bob is visually impaired (centrally blind) and cannot drive. He uses the T to get to medical appointments, to the library, downtown for shopping or lunch when Susan is at work and for other destinations.
We made a conscious choice to move to a place that had mass transit. It allows Bob to be independent. I have found the connections to be timed just right for me to ride the T to work, making a connection downtown.
We think of the T in the same way we think of police or fire protection. These are city services. We, thankfully, have never needed directly to utilize the services of the police or fire departments, but we are willing to pay our taxes to provide that service to those who find themselves in need. Similarly, we are willing to pay taxes to support public transportation to those who need it. The T provides a vital link for those who need assistance.
Think about it: 25 cents for every $100 spent. That’s a measly quarter for every $100 dollars! That won’t even buy a candy bar, but it can give those who need it an independent and honorable ride.
To support our grand Lawrence community, please vote “yes” for Questions 2 and 3.
Bob and Susan Harper,
Lawrence
