Water issue

To the editor:

I want to voice my deep appreciation to the Lawrence city commissioners for their vote to supply Douglas County Rural Water District No. 5 with much of its water needs for the future. This decision greatly reduces the need for a group like Public Wholesale Water District No. 25 to attempt to use eminent domain to seize all water rights in the Kaw Valley between Lawrence and Eudora. This is a huge relief to farmers and those who support present and future fruit, vegetable and other horticultural production.

My most grateful thanks go to members of our area legislative delegation who helped us battle this issue in Topeka. They saw the need to support local agriculture over exporting our resource to other counties.

Thank you, all!

John Pendleton,
