White Cane Walk

The Douglas County Area Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind will hold its White Cane Walk downtown from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday to demonstrate the right to use a white cane or guide dog for every blind Kansan. This is the local commemoration of White Cane Safety Day, which runs nationally on Oct. 15. The unofficial holiday has been celebrated each year since 1964 as a way to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. On Oct. 6, 1964, a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress was signed into law. This resolution authorized the president of the United States to proclaim Oct. 15 of each year as “White Cane Safety Day.” Despite this presidential decree, the holiday remains largely unknown to the general public – a situation that is trying to be corrected through events such as the White Cane Walk.
