Threat of violence increases along with money woes

While depression seems to be the main side effect from the sinking economy in Douglas County, in many cases around the country, the swelling financial concerns are leading people to violence.

Tragedies keep mounting across the country, including:

¢ In Los Angeles last week, a former money manager fatally shot his wife, three sons and his mother-in-law before killing himself.

¢ In Tennessee, a woman fatally shot herself last week as sheriff’s deputies went to evict her from her foreclosed home.

¢ In Akron, Ohio, a 90-year-old Ohio widow shot herself in the chest as authorities arrived to evict her from the modest house she’d called home for 38 years.

¢ In Ocala, Fla., Roland Gore shot his wife and dog in March and then set fire to the couple’s home, which had been in foreclosure, before killing himself.

“We’re kind of lucky here in Lawrence,” said Marciana Vequist, Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center psychologist, indicating financial troubles appear to be much worse in other parts of the country.

She said there will likely be more suicides as economic problems persist.
