Outside dollars

To the editor:

In the Nov. 4 election, our citizens have a great opportunity to enhance the community in which we live. By voting “yes” on Questions 1, 2 and 3 in support of a 0.55-cent sales tax, we will be offered an inexpensive way to improve our aging streets and infrastructure, fire truck replacement and public transportation. For every dollar you spend, the increase in sales tax will be only 0.55 of a cent. This to me is a very worthwhile and intelligent investment. Comparing ourselves to surrounding communities, we will still be very competitive.

By voting “yes,” we will be able to benefit from visitors attending Kansas University football and basketball games, Lied Center productions, citywide musical events, arts and crafts shows, etc. Most visitors attending such events will probably purchase something within the city. What a great way to raise local funds by tapping this valuable resource of money entering the city.

I highly doubt any of these people would refuse to make a purchase due to a minor increase in our local sales tax. These people drive on our decaying streets and walk on our decaying sidewalks. Why not have them assist us in the needed maintenance?

The sales tax will also create funds from the 20,000-plus KU and Haskell students that are probably consumers on a daily basis.

Local property owners are not being asked to pay more on your property taxes. We should all breathe a sigh of relief on this. Please vote “yes” on Questions 1, 2 and 3.
