Firefighters respond to car fully engulfed in flames

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded to a car fire at Second and Elm streets on Sunday night.

The car, which was ablaze just north of the Kansas River, was fully engulfed with 10-foot flames when firefighters were dispatched at about 11:10 p.m., Capt. Jim Sloan said. The fire was under control at 11:22 p.m.

Four firefighters extinguished the flames, revealing a charred Honda Accord. Nobody was injured in the fire. The car’s owner could not immediately be located.

Sloan said that officials at the scene “couldn’t tell the year of the car and didn’t know anything about the cause yet, either.”

Alex Fetterman, an onlooker who was at the Gaslight Tavern earlier in the evening, said that about 10 people ran from the bar to the scene when they smelled smoke.

“It smelled like somebody was burning tires,” she said. “Turns out that was right.”
