Obscene cheer

To the editor:

I wish good luck to coach Mangino on his efforts to curb Kansas University students’ bad behavior of shouting obscenities in the presence of grandma and small children at KU football games.

According to the opinion poll taken in Thursday’s issue of the J-W, (three of the four) potential future leaders of our country saw no problem using offensive language in the KU stadium. One scholarly KU sports fan even justified the guttermouth chant by saying, “It is better than throwing stuff at the other team.”

A total lack of concern or empathy for other people in my opinion is in large part responsible for the crisis we find ourselves in today.

My old high school football coach would have had no problem with this issue. At any hint of unsportsmanlike conduct from the crowd, he would have used the PA system to express his thoughts on the matter. If it happened again, he would have taken the players from the field and forfeited the game if necessary should the disrespectful conduct continue. Sadly, coaches of his courage are long gone and forgotten.

Since it is now all about the money, I would suggest that coach Mangino save his breath and pass out earplugs before every game instead.
