A senior service

To the editor:

The huge baby boom population is now entering retirement. The fact is an amazing 40 percent of those over 65 in our growing senior community will end up with a disability. This means that many baby boomers will eventually be unable to drive. Literally thousands will have to rely on paratransit services to get groceries and to go to medical appointments. Currently over 12 percent of all T passengers are over 55.

Due to federal regulations, if the fixed-route T public transit system is eliminated, then the paratransit T Lift will also have to be closed down. So, the demand for Senior Wheels and Independence Inc. paratransit systems will exceed capacity. Since the two remaining systems will be overloaded, many seniors will have trouble scheduling rides and may not receive the transportation services they need.

Passage of propositions 2 and 3 will keep the T Lift running. Otherwise, you or your neighbors could face a world without transportation. Think about it.
