Deadline to file for stimulus checks is set for Wednesday

The deadline for filing for a federal stimulus payment check keeps getting closer.

There are 14.3 million Americans who have not filed for the check and the deadline is Wednesday, according to the Internal Revenue Service. That is also the deadline for extensions for filing 2007 tax returns.

The IRS said there were 10 million people who requested an extension beyond April 15 to file a return. It is these taxpayers and an estimated 4.3 million retirees and disabled veterans who typically don’t file returns but might be eligible to receive stimulus checks.

To qualify taxpayers must have at least $1 of tax liability or $3,000 of qualifying income from Social Security, Tier 1 railroad benefits, earned income, non-taxable combat pay, or certain veterans benefits. Those who aren’t required to file a return because their income doesn’t meet filing requirements should use form 1040A and write “stimulus payment” at the top.

Most eligible individuals would get checks between $300 and $600.
