Firebirds roll to 36-7 Homecoming victory

The Free State High football team used the one-two punch of Chucky Hunter and Camren Torneden to knock out the Shawnee Mission East Lancers, Friday night at Haskell Stadium.

Behind the strong running of Hunter and Torneden, Free State built an 18-0 halftime lead and tacked on 18 more in the second half to win, 36-7.

The Lancers’ only score of the game came with less than two minutes remaining.

Hunter scored three touchdowns on the night and had 20 carries for 177 yards. Torneden added 85 yards on 10 carries on the ground and 96 yards through the air. He completed 10 of 16 passes, including a touchdown strike to Preston Randolph.

The Firebirds nearly recorded a second-straight shutout but saw SME score on its last drive of the game.

Free State improves to 3-2 on the season and will play at Olathe North next Thursday.
