Another crisis

To the editor:

I listened to the Obama and McCain debate Friday night. These thoughts occurred to me.

I remember the depression of the ’30s and Herbert Hoover saying, “there is a chicken in every pot,” which meant everything is fine. Well, guess what, it wasn’t.

This is just one example how farmers were affected. Dad harvested 1,000 bushels of corn, a bumper crop. One day corn was $1 a bushel. The next day it was 25 cents a bushel. I overheard my dad tell my mother he didn’t know what to do. Banks closed, and many lost a lot of money.

When Franklin Roosevelt was elected president, he established the Federal Land Bank. Dad eventually had to mortgage the farm. He paid off the loan little by little. Big corporations are a big part of this puzzle. Why not say to them, “Bring back the jobs you outsourced for cheap labor overseas, and the government will help you.”

American workers are the legs that hold up our country. They are good producers. Stop cutting off their legs. This administration seemed oblivious to what was going on.

Don’t forget who got us into an unnecessary war. Don’t forget those who shed their blood and died. Make sure companies honor the contracts that guarantee them their job when they return home. Most of all, give them the medical care they need and the respect they justly deserve. By good leadership and accountability and the grace of God, America can work its way out of this crisis.
