A new program launched by the Sunflower Foundation: Health Care for Kansans provides 15 nonprofit leaders from across the state an opportunity to learn how to become effective public policy advocates for their organizations and the people they serve.

The first Sunflower Foundation Advocacy Fellowship class of 2008-2009 is part of the foundation’s new nonpartisan advocacy initiative, which is designed to provide education and training opportunities for nonprofit leaders.

Leaders selected for the first fellowship class:

Lawrence: Mitzi E. McFatrich, Kansas Advocates for Better Care executive director, and Elizabeth A. Weeks Leonard, Kansas University School of Law associate professor.

•Mark D. Hunsaker, police commissioner for Honolulu, congratulated 58 graduates of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center at a ceremony on Nov. 21 at the 4-H Encampment Building at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

The graduates began their training course Aug. 18 and represented 45 municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. They were the 199th basic training class of graduates. Graduates receive certificates of course completion and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.

Area graduates:

• Eudora Police Department — Brandon Sharp, officer 1.

• Franklin County Sheriff Department — Frederick Dowd, deputy sheriff.
