Offices, services close for Thanksgiving holiday

Most government offices and public services in Lawrence and Douglas County will be closed Thursday in observance of Thanksgiving. Many will also be closed Friday.

All city, county and state offices will be closed both days, as will offices in most area towns and counties.

Federal offices in the General Services Administration and federal courts will be closed Thursday.

Most banks will be closed Thursday but open Friday.

Lawrence Transit System and T-Lift buses will not run on Thursday but will operate on a normal Friday schedule.

Parking at meters in downtown Lawrence will be free on Thursday and Friday. Meters will run regularly from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Any residential solid waste collection scheduled for Thursday will instead be on Friday. Friday and Saturday commercial waste collection will be completed as normal.

All city recreation centers will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday and not open Thursday. The East Lawrence and Holcom Park Recreation Centers and the Community Building will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Friday.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be closed Thursday and open with holiday hours Friday, including for lap swimming from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. and the zero depth children’s area from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The water slide and diving area will be open from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Carl Knox Natatorium, 1901 La., will be closed Wednesday through Sunday.

Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., will be closed Thursday and open Friday. Eagle Bend Golf Course will be closed Thursday and open regular hours Friday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Thursday and reopen at 9 a.m. Friday.

There will be no mail delivery Thursday, and post offices will be closed. UPS and FedEx deliveries also will not be made Thursday.

Home delivery and Bus 62 senior service meals are canceled Thursday and Friday. All activities at the Lawrence Senior Center, including clubs, classes and the noon meal, will be canceled both days. Meals also will not be served at Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, and the Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin City senior centers.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels will not be delivering Thursday or Friday.

The business office of the Journal-World will be open for walk-ins and phone inquiries from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday.

USA Today will not be published Thursday.

State law mandates that liquor stores be closed Thursday.
