Gingerbread houses to be auctioned

Houses and other structures made from gingerbread will be auctioned next month to help fund services of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County.

The Eldridge Gingerbread Festival & Auction is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at The Eldridge Extended, 201 W. Eighth St. The fee is $35 to attend the auction and it is open to anyone 18 and older.

It will be the 14th edition of the annual event, with 22 judges — including Justin Anderson, Mary Jane Mangino, Cindy Maude, Martin Moore, Jim Schwartzburg and Cindy Self — reviewing gingerbread entries created and donated by locals.

Proceeds go to the organization, which helps match mentors with children who receive the friendship of an adult in their lives. Last year’s event generated $41,000.

Entries will be available for viewing Dec. 7, 8 and 9 at The Eldridge Extended for a suggested donation of $2. The viewing is open to the public.
