First road test awaits Kansas women’s hoops

KU junior guard Sade Morris (20) beats the Iowa defense to the hoop on Nov. 18. The Jayhawks will hit the road for the first time this season when they face St. Louis U. at 4 p.m. today.

Score more than 100 points. Check. Did that in the opener against Sacred Heart.

Knock off a quality team. Check. Did that last Tuesday against Iowa.

Win one on the road. Not yet.

But Kansas University’s surging women’s basketball team will have that opportunity today after traveling the I-70 gantlet across Missouri to meet Saint Louis U.

Tipoff will be at 4 p.m. at Chaifetz Arena on the SLU campus.

Unfriendly arenas weren’t kind to Kansas last season. The Jayhawks won their first three games at home, then went to SMU and laid an egg, falling 68-58, on their way to a 2-11 road record.

This is a new year, however, with more mature players and coach Bonnie Henrickson believes they’ll feed off Tuesday’s 76-55 victory over Iowa In Allen Fieldhouse.

“It’s not that we’ve won,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said, “it’s how we’ve been playing. Now it’s important to take that mentality on the road.”

Kansas walloped the Billikens, 81-55, last December in Allen Fieldhouse, but the Bills’ best player — Theresa Lisch — was out with a wrist injury. Lisch scored 32 points last weekend in a 98-86 loss at Morehead State.

“That’ll get our kids’ attention,” Henrickson said.

Lisch, a 5-foot-9 junior, also had eight rebounds and eight assists. She has averaged 27 points in the Bills’ first three games. Saint Louis nipped Western Michigan, 68-67, in its first home game after opening with an 85-77 loss at Southern Illinois.

Kansas’ early leader has been Danielle McCray. The 5-11 junior has averaged 22 points and seven rebounds in the first two outings. She’s been torrid from three-point range, nailing 8-of-13 attempts.

After today, the Jayhawks will have a seven-day schedule break before playing host to New Orleans U. at 2 p.m. next Sunday.
