Nice synthesis

To the editor:

As a senior citizen, I frequently enjoy the nostalgia that creeps into many of Bill Mayer’s sports columns. And as a child of the ’60s, I know that the combination of nostalgia and race seldom results in any kind of affirmative action moment. But Mr. Mayer’s Nov. 7 column recalling his conversations with the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall was an unusual synthesis of nostalgia and racial equality. It is unfortunate that the column was not placed on the front page, or at least the editorial page, because its placement on the sports page was completely overshadowed by the firing of Ron Prince, one of the few black coaches in college football.
