The Free State High football team held Olathe North on a 4th-and-5 to capture a 10-6 victory on Friday and advance to the semifinals of the Class 6A state playoffs.

The Eagles threw an incomplete pass on the fourth down with 1:45 left, and Free State took over on downs and ran out the clock the rest of the way.

Earlier in the season, Olathe North knocked off Free State, 35-7. This marks the second time in school history Free State has advanced to the state semifinals.

Free State will face Blue Valley at 7 p.m. on Friday in the state semifinals at Blue Valley High.

Fourth quarter update: Free State 10, Olathe North 6

Free State junior quarterback Camren Torneden put the Firebirds ahead of Olathe North, 10-6, with an 8-yard touchdown run. The drive featured two Olathe North facemask penalties. The 90-yard drive took Free State 14 plays and took 3:16 off the clock.

Olathe North quarterback David Blazevic put the Eagles ahead of the Firebirds, 6-3, with a 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Eagles missed the extra point.

Free State currently has 11:56 remaining in the final quarter.

Free State and Olathe North traded interceptions in the third quarter. The Firebirds’ Cameron Schmidt intercepted Olathe North in the end zone. Camren Torneden threw an interception for Free State at the Olathe North 4-yard line.

Free State leads Olathe North, 3-0, at the half. The Firebirds have held the Eagles to only two first downs in the first half.

Gabe Ballard-Hansen kicked a 22-yard field goal to put the Firebirds (7-3) ahead of the Eagles (8-2). Camren Torneden set up the field goal try with a 30-yard punt return earlier.
